Robert A. Heinlein (1907-1988), author of ground-breaking novels such as RED PLANET, STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND and THE MOON IS A HARSH MISTRESS, is generally considered one of the most influential writers of the twentieth century. SFWA’s Grand Master Award was established in his honor. The film “Destination Moon,” which Heinlein scripted and for which he provided technical direction, remains a classic and is considered the first modern science fiction film. Heinlein received posthumously the Congressional Medal of Honor for his enormous influence on space enterprises. The Robert A. & Virginia Heinlein Prize Trust was founded to encourage space exploration.
